Job Description: Specialist in General Surgery

Requirements

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery plus an Appropriate qualification as a Specialist in General Surgery or a related sub-specialty.
• Registration certificate with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• 3 years' experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
• HPCSA current registration for the 2026/2027 annual registration period.

Knowledge, Competencies

• Strong record of clinical governance.
• Clinical expertise.
• Surgical skill.
• Training and teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Publication record (an advantage).

Duties

• Effective overall management of the surgical unit.
• Assess and ensure good quality clinical service delivery by developing and implementing guidelines, and providing training and support to students, medical interns, community service doctors, nursing staff, medical officers, and specialists within the unit.
• Management and control of equipment.
• Optimize the use of human and other resources.
• Participate in relevant hospital and management committees.
• Encourage and support relevant research and publications.
• Contribute to electronic databases for research purposes.
• Strategize and implement outreach programmes.
• Provide after-hours specialist services.
