Qualifications Required
- A relevant three‑year tertiary qualification (NDiploma/Bachelor's/BTech) (minimum 360 credits) or an equivalent qualification plus 3‑5 years of experience in physical security.
- Two years of supervisory or junior management experience.
- Knowledge of conducting research.
- Knowledge of investigations and security breaches.
- Understanding of electronic security systems.
Key Performance Areas
- Implement physical security processes.
- Respond to security incidents and assess their impact.
- Assist with investigations of security breaches and maintain an incident‑tracking database.
- Carry out risk assessments, threat appraisals and security audits.
- Analyse risk factors for new and existing facilities and develop remediation plans.
- Manage schedules for security personnel and track attendance.
- Provide security services to contractors, provinces and agencies.
- Review and report on accidents, safety hazards and fire risks; file safety reports.
- Liaise with law enforcement and relevant internal and external organisations.
- Monitor vandalism and loss of property; report incidents.
- Ensure security systems remain operational and remediate failures promptly.
- Provide physical security services.
- Maintain duty rosters for 24‑hour security coverage.
- Monitor surveillance equipment and respond to failures and emergencies outside normal hours.
- Maintain DVR, alarm and access‑control systems for all facilities.
- Provide security awareness and training programmes.
- Assist with security management reports on projects and initiatives.
- Provide oversight and direction to security staff, including work‑assignment scheduling.
- Handle lock and key requests and tracking.
- Integrate security aspects related to personnel, documents, communications, computers and surveillance.
- Conduct security tasks to ensure safety of employees, patients and the public.
- Implement physical security and vetting policies and procedures.
- Train employees on security policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with security policies.
- Guide facilities management in developing and maintaining security processes in line with best practice standards and regulations.
- Stay updated on new policies and procedures from other departments.
- Maintain the overall security function within GPAA.
- Support the development and implementation of a business plan and budget for security.
- Advise management on security implications of executive decisions.
- Screen employees and maintain security clearances.
- Maintain records of security incidents.
- Ensure fire safety systems throughout GPAA offices.
- Ensure occupational health and safety procedures are followed.
- Assign daily work to security staff based on suitability.
- Implement minimum information security standards, minimum physical security standards, and compliance with the Public Premises and Vehicles Act (Act 53 of 1985).
- Manage and develop staff.
- Coach, mentor and take corrective action for performance issues; develop performance standards and evaluate the team.
- Monitor human‑resource matters such as leave, recruitment and grievances.
- Prepare work plans for the unit and align them with the directorate’s overall plan.
