Qualification Requirements

  • A relevant National Diploma or Degree with at least three years experience in a legal environment.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of the Public Service Act.
  • Familiarity with South African Pensions Fund legislation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Key Performance Areas

Provide Legal Administration Services

  • Support management with legal advice, guidance and opinions on GEP Law, 1996 and related matters.
  • Review documents and refer important matters to senior staff.
  • Check legal documents for compliance.
  • Administer legal matters within the department.

Litigation Management

  • Schedule hearings and ensure court processes are followed.
  • Collect necessary information and documentation.
  • Explain procedures for divorce, survivor and other claims under GEP Law.
  • Research, correct errors and resolve discrepancies; inform applicants of decisions.
  • Prepare materials for each hearing and produce reports on decisions and recommendations.
  • Examine case records, ensure documents and exhibits are properly recorded.
  • Prepare for hearings by researching relevant laws, regulations and precedents.
  • Manage fee claims for panel members.
  • Prepare instructions for implementing court decisions.
  • Attend cost assessments and appeals in the High Court.

Review Litigated Claims or Disputed Claims

  • Interview parties involved to obtain required information.
  • Explain options for appealing unfavorable rulings.
  • Prepare recommendations and supporting documentation.

Render Administrative Support

  • Handle court processes served on the agency and other claims under GEP Law.
  • Prepare written reviews of applications, certificates and employer records.
  • Maintain hearing documents, calendars and confirm hearing dates.
  • Ensure compliance with court decisions and update case statistics.
  • Prepare memoranda and drafts of decisions and judgments.
  • Issue written decisions promptly.
  • Assist supervisors with training on legislation and related topics.

Supervision of Staff

  • Assign work according to staff skills and competencies.
  • Manage performance, develop, train and coach staff.
  • Maintain discipline and provide monthly statistics.
  • Keep staff informed of changes in work environment or management decisions.
