
Medical Specialist Grade 1 to 3 (General Surgery) at Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness
Experience
- Grade 1: No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
- Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
- Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
Minimum Educational Qualification
Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
Duties
Provide clinical service delivery at specialist level across the full spectrum of General Surgery services with a focus on the endoscopy service. May also be required to perform surgical procedures in theatre. Conduct consultant ward rounds with senior decision-making responsibility for patient care, including disposition decisions and oversight and input into OPD services. Ensure clinical governance through accurate medical record keeping, data/trend analysis, contribution to Morbidity & Mortality meetings, and management of complaints. Utilize existing digital platforms for referrals and patient documentation. Engage in teaching, training, and research activities, including supervision and teaching of junior doctors and participation in the hospital’s academic program. Contribute to improving internal systems within the General Surgery service, both within the hospital and the Metro East ecosystem, and participate in the wider management of medical services within the hospital, both clinically and administratively, where reasonable and feasible.
